As I sit here two days after returning from NYC and doing the Parkinson's Unity Walk, I have one thought: I wish I could go back and do it again. It was a fantastic experience. The spirit of optimism and unity (thus the name) was overwhelming. I saw no fear and despair, instead pride and strength. There were people with Parkinson's, family members, friends, young, old-- everyone was represented. The energy was contagious. I felt honored to be a part of something so much bigger than one person-- an event that truly changes lives. I just checked the website and so far the donations for the walk total $ 1,216,320 (donations are accepted through June 1, by the way). That is $1,216,320 of funds that will go directly to Parkinson's research. How incredible is that? That makes my $2,294.70 seem insignificant, however I know this is not the case. Thousands of walkers accumulating thousands of dollars can and do make a difference. Maybe part of this money that I helped raise (that you donated) will unlock the doors to the cause of Parkinson's, better treatment of symptoms and ultimately a CURE. For this I walked, for this we all walked. I will keep walking until a cure is found. As a cherished friend told me, "The ultimate finish line will only be crossed when they find a cure for PD." Amen to that. Thank you ALL for your support and your donations. Your generosity during times of such hardship are appreciated more than you know. Thank you for being a part of this experience with me and my family. As it was so blatantly obvious on Saturday, support makes all the difference. I hope my mom knows how much we all love and support her. We love you, Mom!! I believe that over 10,000 people attended the walk. I'm not sure about the final numbers. Hours prior to the walk attendees perused the informational tents set up and manned by leaders in the Parkinson's community.
There was an hour-long program filled with many knowledgeable and inspirational speakers.
This is Stacie Mishler. I can't remember her exact title, but I know this event would not have been a success without her. (She's very friendly, too. She responded to every email I sent whenever I had questions.)Muhammed Ali's daughter
Katie Hood, CEO of the Michael J. Fox Foundation
Former Attorney General Janet Reno
This is how Sven kept Nikolas occupied during the program so I could devote my attention to it. (Thank you, Sven!!)
Just look at how many people there were in Central Park on this beautiful spring day! Makes me wonder if it was equivalent to Montana's entire population....
Nikolas got a sudden burst of energy during the final leg of the walk. Look at him go!
Approaching the finish line....
This is Nikolas saying, "I did it for you, Grandma."
Final scenes from Central Park....
I hope there is no need for a Walk next year, but if there is we plan on being there. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us.....mom.....dad....Thad....? =) Think about it!
